Emotional Intelligence and Autism

How does emotional intelligence apply to individuals on the autism spectrum?

In general, individuals with autism spectrum disorder have lower emotional intelligence. More specifically, the areas of emotional intelligence most often impacted with ASD include perceiving emotions, using emotions when relating to others, understanding emotions, and managing emotions. Struggles within these areas may detract from academic and vocational success. Because of this, intervention focused on development of emotional intelligence is important to assist with all areas of the person's life.
