Can emotional intelligence be learned and why is it important in our everyday lives?
Emotions and moods need to be effectively regulated and managed to be successful in our daily lives. If we do not learn to regulate our moods and emotions, we become slaves to them. People who learn to harness their emotions, are more able to solve problems and are more emotionally fulfilled. Difficulties with managing emotions can lead to unrewarded experiences and feelings of depression. Modern theories of emotional intelligence include self-regulation/ management, self-perception/ awareness, interpersonal skills, and decision making. These areas can be focused on in therapy in order to build an individual’s emotional intelligence.
