EI Areas of need in Autism

Although Autism is a spectrum disorder with a wide variation of presentations, delays are often experienced with understanding and describing emotions. There are also many social nuances that come naturally to neurotypical individuals. Such nuances as understanding inauthentic emotions and interpreting atypical nonverbal expressions do not come naturally to most individuals on the autism spectrum. Additionally, individuals on the autism spectrum may be less likely to mimic or mirror emotional expressions which makes it more difficult to generate emotions necessary for relating to others. Impairments are also often seen with theory of mind or taking others’ perspectives on situations, conceptualizing complex emotions, and understanding the antecedents and consequences of emotions. As related to self-regulation, individuals on the spectrum are less likely to use optimal strategies for regulating emotions, less able to interpret and manage others’ emotions, and may experience emotional meltdowns. All of these areas fall under the umbrella of emotional intelligence and can be addressed through a targeted evaluation and treatment.
